What puzzles me is that nobody comments on putting low tread tires on the front of their cars.
Nobody points out the increased stopping distances with low tread tires on the front and new tires on the rear.
Nobody points out losing control of the front end of your car when turning with low tread tires on the front and new tires on the rear. Try this when it is wet out...have fun putting your car into the guardrail!
Nobody points out poor traction when accelerating (on FWD) with low tread tires on the front and new tires on the rear.

I'm not saying that there aren't potential dangers to putting low tread tires on the back and new tires on the front, what I am saying is that I FEEL that there is less potential for an accident when you add up all the things that the front tires are responsible for doing and all of the forces the front tires are exposed to in comparisson to the rear tires.

You think nobody is going to get killed when having to stop in short distances and the front tires lock up (or the ABS kicks in) and increases your stopping distances and then....BAM! you rear end somebody? You don't think that your front tires are the ones that guide your car through a turn, that they are the ones that are directly responsible for changing the forces of momentum when you are turning?

If you read my earlier post don't rotate your tires at all and put 40 or 50,000 miles on them, call me up and let me know which ones have more tread remaining on them....I'll guarantee that the rear tires are exposed to less wear.

And from my personal experience, I had the pleasure of putting my father's Mercury Sable into a curb while turning on an off ramp with low tread depth tires on the front and good as new tires on the rear. This happened 13 years ago. When he and I were looking at the car afterwards we both agreed that we should have rotated the fronts to the rear and the rears to the front (modified X rotation).
