Hey StanleyB,
First of all, why are you building your own kernel? Does your current kernel not support some of your hardware? Many distributions come with a kernel which contains just the basics but which has zillions of modules which are loaded when appropriate. Which distribution are you using?
When you ask about "best settings", are you talking about what to include/exclude from your kernel, or are you talking about X settings, such as resolution, video modes, etc? Are you having problems with the actual process of building the kernel or are you not sure what to include/exclude in the kernel?
