Cold Weather Battery Problems

The car's a 1980 99 non-turbo, but it's a battery question, so I'm posting it here.
Last week, I had to push-start the car, after it wouldn't turn over for me to go home from work (I tossed in some jumper cables in the trunk when I got home). The headlights were fairly dim, too. So, when I got home, I sanded down the battery terminals and cables so they're nice and shiny (there was corrosion on the + terminal). I did the same for the alternator posts. The car started right up, with nice, bright headlights. The alternator is a 55 amp one, but I'll be putting in an 80 amp one from a C900 as soon as I get it refurbished.
So, after sitting this weekend (temps around 20F at night, 35-40F daytime high), I left for work, and it turned over, but was slow cranking. After it caught, I took a look at the headlights, and they were nice and bright.
The battery is an interstate, bought in 1999 (at least the "9" was punched out, and I bought the car in 2000). Its label says 525 CCA, but I'm not sure what the recommendation is for cold cranking amps. Any opinions about the problem?
TIA
Roger
