Driving tips (and other stuff) for Australia?

I am planning a 3 week vacation to Sydney/ Melbourne and surrounding areas this April and need to know a few things:
Are radar detectors legal in Victoria and New South Wales, and will USA-spec detectors work there? What are the common bands?
How much over the posted limit is the danger point for a speeding ticket? In Washington State +5 mph is ok, +10 mph is getting risky.
Any other driving tips will be greatly appreciated. I already understand the important one - you guys drive on the left, right?
Are there any restrictions on pocket knives? I have a 3 inch folding knife I usually carry - is that a problem? I would, of course, send it through airline check-in in my checked luggage. The Glock will stay at home ;(
Are there any good websites devoted to performance driving (not racing) in OZ, and also to legal restrictions such as I have asked about?
This post may make me look like a scoff-law, but I'm not,...really. I just don't want to do something stupid through ignorance of the local laws.
Thanks.
