A friend has a Focus ZX3 that I have driven on many an occasion and I have to tell you its a blast to drive, even though its no Saab. The quality was very ify on the 2000 model but his car, a 2001, has been very reliable - except for a squeaky front brake problem. While a Saab would blast it off the road on the highway around town they would be a close match - the ZX3 has a power to weight ratio the same as a 2.3l 9-5 sedan. The styling is a matter of taste but I think it looks fantastic. As for Saturn, what an absolute piece of crap based on GMs ancient Cavalier and that styling, in my eyes, is very very sad! But then again, its a matter of taste. As far as the 2.0l Zetec engine on the Focus goes it is a tried and tested unit designed and built in Europe so I dont think there will be many engine problems. The ZX3 is way more fun than a boring old Golf and while it doesnt have the quality of the aformentioned car it is every bit a drivers car which is what I think of Saab, actually! Id really like to try a SVT though.

NB If you do go for a Ford make sure you buy from a very respectable dealer - an oxymoron I know - as I have heard there are really crap Ford dealers out there and some very good ones. Try the dealers that sell Lincolns and Fords together.
