Valve-train question for engineers & like-minded

An acquaintence told me about an interesting valvetrain design whereby the valves aren't valves as we normally know them, i.e., long, stemmed bits that flatten out into round plugs, actuated by cams, rockers & what have you. Instead, the valves he talked about consist of round disks through which a hole has been drilled radially. The valves don't go up & down; they spin in place. For example, the hole in an exhaust "valve" would rotate around into position to expel exhaust gases from a hole in the combustion chamber just at the right time, then, as the valve continued to spin, the hole would pass around, allow for the combustion cycle, then come around again to repeat the exhaust removal process.
I hope I'm explaining this clearly. Does anyone know anything about this? It seemed like a good idea - fewer moving parts, no valve springs to contend with, easily timed, etc. Or maybe he knew not of what he spoke?
