FWD v. 4WD for snow handling

Well, we finally got enough snow to play around in. My Viggen has the 16 inch rim and Gislaved snow tires combo. I wanted to do a direct comparison with my 4wd truck, but the emergency brake in the truck is sticking. Thus, this comparison is between my Viggen with snow tires and what I remember from driving last year with the 4wd truck.
The Viggen does surprisingly well, although it takes more technique in modulating the throttle (with TCS off) than the truck. With the truck, you just hit the gas and go. With the car, you have to modulate the throttle to get enough traction when trying to get up some of the nasty hills around here. I gave the Viggen a pretty good workout, specifically taking it up some of the harder hills and stopping at the bottom of the hills.
My concerns about the Viggen are the low ground clearance (there was only about 2 inches of snow on the roads when I went out) and hills. The benefits of the Viggen are the TCS (which I turned off during most of the testing, although it does seem to help; however, getting up some of the hills is strange because you can feel the brakes working and the TCS cuts off power to the engine, so you'll be pressing the throttle and nothing is happening) and the brakes. The brakes are awesome. For some reason, the designers of 4wd/awd SUVs and trucks seem to forget about the brakes and give you crappy brakes that really aren't suitable for the vehicle. For instance, my truck weighs about the same as the Viggen, yet the Viggen's brakes are an A+ while I'd rate the trucks (comparatively) as a C-.
