I was in buffalo with my 9-5 wagon during the 4-7 feet of snow "event". My wagon with Dunlop Wintersport M2 (215/55/16) performed well on the roads - about 1/2 the roads I was on were "plowed" - not to dry road but to hard pack snow, the other 1/2 was on roads with anywhere from 2-8" of snow - no problems with the saab. TCS kicked on a few times.
Never at all felt concerned about safety, getting stuck. Was with wide and 2 small kids - these cars are great. I don't need 4wd (I recently owned a ford expedition), 4WD is a great marketing concept for the automakers for about 80% of the people, the other 20% truly need 4wd for "unimproved" roads during winter, of for hauling boats.
