Dan: I have used Griot's Garage clay bar and spray lubricant for about six years, and have had excellent results, with no damage whatsoever. I did buy a Mothers clay bar about a year ago just to try it out, and would not use anything but the Griots product. The mothers clay bar was a rigid, no conforming type of substance, and had a hard finish to it.When you try to squeeze it in your hand, it remained in it's original rectangular shape.
I tried in on the lower section of my wife's bumper( key word, wife's),and would not use it.
The Griots product feels like a soft blob of modelers clay, and as you hold it in your hand and rub the surface of the paint, you feel it changing shape. What I believe this does is allows the outer surface to continually change, and take the minor contaminants that it picks up to be absorbed into the clay. I just threw away my first one this year, and probably used it thirty or more times to clean my 9-5 and 9000 Aero.
With this product, there is absolutely no way to damage the paint, and I suggest you check it out. http://www.griotsgarage.com
Good luck
