Well well, here we are on opposite sides of a debate again. First it's fog lights, now drunk driving. The concept of having an on board breatalizer has been around for at least twenty years, and has been limited from being implemented so far for mostly technical reasons. Of all the possible reasons for not implementing this, I believe that those sound technical reasons have been cost of manufacture, ability of the device to properly identify alcohol as opposed to other false positives, the possibility that a malfunctioning system might accidentally shut down a car in motion, which could cause a serious accident, etc. Never before have I heard the argument expressed that having a car with a government mandated device that prevents alcohol impaired driving is a step towards socialism. In case you are wondering what my definition of alcohol impaired driving is,it is simple. Any driving done while alcohol is in your system. As a pilot who is expected to comply with the rules in the sky, that means about 8 hours between consumption and ability to operate.
No doubt you might counter with the fact that individual response to alcohol is different between individuals, and I would agree with you, however, the purpose of a law is to have a common standard that applies to all.I might think that I am a better driver at high speeds than most others, but I still have to obey the same laws as everyone else.
In any case, since about 45,000 people are killed on the roads every year in the US, I do not think that it is inappropriate to have a device in a car that prevents operation by someone who is drunk. I imagine that many who read this will argue my definition of drunk, but again,in other areas where safety is involved, the definition is often one where any alcohol is in use.
