I don't plan to ever have a cell phone, or use Onstar. Frankly, I don't see the need. Could they save your life? Yes, perhaps, and those are valid points. My question to you is, what did people do before cell phones were invented, before satellites littered the sky? Do you seriously believe the death/injury rate for automobile users has actually gone done since these inventions have been in frequent use? If anything, I'd say the opposite is true. Not necessarily as a result of people on the phone while driving (though I have no doubts that is a contributor), but simply because the traffic volumes have increased drastically, at least in this area.
Instead of relying on technology to save me, I prefer to use common sense and prevention to avoid getting into bad situations. I combine this with a healthy dose of faith that my life isn't simply going to end in the middle of nowhere, all alone, from a freak accident. Life is what you make it, and I for one am not going to drive around worrying about all the worst things that could happen, and then worry more because I've forgot my cell phone or don't have Onstar. I've got enough to manage without imagining my own demise, I'll leave the life and death stuff to the universe and trust what needs to be, will be.
YMMV,
Aaron Gilbert
