I have had 3 900's and 2 9000's in my family since 1983. In my case, my 1991 9000T has been the best-engineered and the tightest car as it ages. And it has been the superior car for my primary needs: travelling comfortably, safely and quickly on 700-mile-a-day-and-better trips. I think that it is the superior configuration for long-range touring. I am thinking of replacing it this year a new 9-5, because that car seems to be even better at that mission.
I think that the 1986-1989 (or maybe 1990) models of the 9000 had a fair number of teething problems that seem to have been ironed out by 1991. I know that my 1988 9000T was a great design, but it suffered lots of little squeaks, wind noise and maintenance issues that I have not experienced on the 1991 model.
My advice to you is to drive both models, to stay away from the early 9000 models, ask to see all maintenance records or history, and then go for the one that you like the most.
