Ever since I saw my first James Bond movie as a kid. It will always be my James Bond car, never mind the Aston Martins, or the BMWs... So I figure I'll work up to getting one.
My favorite style is still the original Giugiaro Esprit till 87. But it's too small inside for me - my knees bang up against the steering (thanks to an amp placed right behind the seat...), and no headroom for a helmut. The later Peter Stevens model (from 87) have a little bit more legroom and amazingly fits me nicely. Well, the front wheel well intrudes right into the footwell. Makes the 900/9-3 look very good. The very heavy clutch (makes the Porsche one feels light) and sloppy shifting makes it much worse. And yes, there's no rear visibility as well.
I did take a '93 Turbo SE for a drive. The turbo boost makes the car feel faster than the more refined late-model Porsches (993 and 996). The car also understeers when pushed, making it feel very safe unlike the NSX which feels twitchy at the limits. Lotus ergonomics, or the lack thereof, was a real problem. I got off with the handbrake on, and felt like I was stalling in traffic. Couldn't see the handbrake warning light which was offset at an angle. It also felt like a car from yesteryear. Pretty unrefined. And lastly, the engine, whether it's a V8 or I4, sounds more like a souped up rice rocket than a high end performance car. Nothing like the wonderful soundtrack of a Porsche or a Ferrari. Nevertheless, it's my dream car. Can't see driving more than a few K miles a year on this.
