It is powerful and a nice get up and go, but the lubrication for camshafts was a very bad design and lifters and camshafts wore down way to quickly. Only the owners that changed oil very often where on the safe side.
The CIS injection system never worked really good with the O2 sensor/lambda system and the engine had a very rough/surging idle, even when everything was adjusted to perfection. If the O2 sensor is disconnected it actually runs better on idle.
The engine is what they call an odd firing engine, whereas the two opposite pistons share the same journal on the crankshaft.
The engine was suppose to be an 8 cyl engine but energy crises in the 70's made them cut two cylinders off. If they had stayed with the 8 cyl concept, the design would have worked better.
The redesigned PRV engine that showed up in mid 80's have an even firing 6 cyl and the much better LH fuel injection system. It runs and sounds a lot better than the V6 installed in the Saab's.
