Question about dealer loaner cars

Mayeb those of you who work at dealerships can help me out here.
I brought my Saab in for a checkup today and was furnished a loaner. But the loaner was not a Saab -- it was a Dodge In-crap-id from a local Enterprise Rent-a-Car.
My dealer has a lot full of used Saab's, even some C900's. Why in the world would the dealer go to the expense of paying Enterprise $42 a day to give me a piece of crap Dodge (they also offered Suzuki Vitara's - retch -- Jeep Liberty's (ralph) and a Mercury) when they could furnish used Saab loaners that are sitting on the lot? Are they that desperate to make sure that no new or used car that could potentially be sold move off the lot even for a day? Why not loan out used cars that don't seem to move off the lot? Are there legal issues? Financing restrictions on loaning out cars? Some dealers do this Saab loaner arrangement -- do they sell the cars to a rental company and then rent them back as-needed?
To me (and my uninformed mind) loaning out Saab's should be part of what these places offer you as customer service. I bought a Saab because I like them; I would also like to drive a loaner Saab. Brand Loyalty. It seems cheaper, too -- I mean, what's the liklihood that the 5-6 loaners you let out to service customers every weekday would get sold anyway, especially if they're on your used lot? On a weekday?
Can those of you who work or have worked at dealerships explain the economics to me?
