Speaking of the Vectra, I thought the 9-3S looked a lot like the new Opel, (which will have a hatchback), so I compared pictures. For sure there are family traits, but my verdict is non equivocal. The SAAB is much more elegant. The Opel is more of the CTS tendency while the SAAB is a nice blend of BMW, Volvo (the rear) Mercedes (the rear roof line), Audi (profile) and SAAB, although it is a little to understated for my taste.
But more importantly, as many have written, if you look at the chassis and tranny characteristics, this car should be a lot of fun to drive and I think that has to be target no.1. Sure Nissan stun everybody with the design of the new Altima and they should be congratulated for it. But with the limited resources of SAAB (all things being relative) I prefer they allot more on the chassis and mechanicals than exterior design. Today, all cars come out of CAD and wind tunnel testing so they are bound by the same basic limitations. But who still builds cars that are truly fun to drive? Isn’t that SAAB’s true uniqueness? We spend enough time in cars, why not enjoy it as much as possible!
I really think this car can be the building block for something fundamentally sane for SAAB. The 9-5 paved the way for the «new» SAAB and the 9-3S will widen that road.
Just my 3.5 cents (Can.)
