Clutch/Pressure Plate Problem

The Situation:
I have a '97 900SE turbo, manual transmission vehicle. Over the course of the last two years, beginning in March 2000, the clutch cable has been replaced three times. When it was replaced this last time, it was also discovered that the clutch/pressure plate was not functioning thereby making it extremely difficult to move the stick into gears/grinding horribly. I was told by my Saab specialist that the pressure plate was not depressing correctly and that this was not a normal thing to see on a '97 with only 53K miles.
The Questions:
I've been reading some entries on the bulleting board and have read that some of you have been able to replace/access the pressure plate. Was this done without removing the entire engine? If this is not considered to be a wear/tear component, should Saab be replacing the clutch even though this has been out of warranty, if so, how do I go about it? Lastly, could it be another problem altogether?
Please respond even if you have an answer to only one of my questions.
Many thanks.
