I can only answer one of your questions, but no, the engine does not have to be removed to replace clutch components. The transmission does need to come out however, and will take about 5.5 hours to remove and replace.
I had the clutch on my '95 replaced at about 65k miles, partially because it was shuddering badly and partially because the trans was out to have it's seals replaced.
You might try posting this on the "NG900" board, the forum for your car.
