I think compaqted is a bit missinformed with some of his information. I haven't been to a NJ court, so thing might be a bit diferent, but in general "plea bargaining" works pretty well. The first time you show up is just to make a plea, the cop won't be there. Get therein the morning (the ticket probably instructs you to do this anyway) and there'll be a line of people to talk to the DA. Ask nicely, say that your record is clean, and see what he can do for you. If you have a good argument as to why you were speeding it might help (remember, this isn't the judge and there mostly friednly guys, so they'll probably cut you a break). Ask to have the speeding reduced to 10mph over (which should lower the fine)and to get a PJC for the passing (you won't pay a fine at all as long as you stay clean for a couple years.) Since it seems points won't go on your license it may not be worth it, but if you have to time then go for it. At least where I live (and I think this is pretty standard) you have to pay court costs whether you go or not. Trying to plead not guilty is probably not worth while unless you have the time to prepare a fairly extensive case (thoug you gotta wonder how exactly he tagged you). The cop will probably show up if you plead not guilty, though I kind of doubt that he gets three chances to do so, as you could probably get the case dismissed if the prosecutor doesn't produce his witness. But I digress.
