I went to the FAQ posted by someone on this. I don't understand why some states commented on decreased pedal control when barefoot or not being able to operate the brakes well enough.
I go barefoot when getting comfortable with a new vehicle, long hot drives, or practicing precision operation of the pedals. I took my sneakers off at Viggen flight academy to practice heal and toe exercises for example. If it's not oppresively hot, I wear piloti driving shoes on long trips for comfort.
I feel I can operate the pedals more accurately when barefoot compared to many types of shoes. Sort of like the blunt analogy someone used with driving with ski boots. Some of my size 13 shoes are too wide and I hit the brake at the same time as the gas on ocassion in my Viggen and E-type where the pedals are fairly close together. This is never a problem when going barefoot. If you can stand up on your own on one leg, you are putting your full weight onto one foot, so I'm not sure how wearing a shoe would enhance your foots ability to operate the brake pedal.
The only believable story I've heard that reinforces the idea that shoes are safer in a 4-wheel motor vehicle is in regards to walking at accident scenes.
The only other conceivable thing I can come up with on my own is that driving shoes or leather shoes might help prevent your feet from getting burnt in a car fire, but I would think that if that is a concern you'd also be wearing other things to prevent the rest of your body from similar fate. I don't think a shoe is going to prevent a crumpling car body from crushing your feet or breaking bones if it's a real messy wreck.
Anyone want to correct me or offer more insight why some states recommend wearing shoes?
