I have an old Saab 900 GLi 84', and had the same problem. Usually maintans the car myself, and thought I could fix this myself too. Traced the problem to a leaky vacuum hose after I had changed spark plugs, distributor-cap, rotor, wires and fuelfilter with no luck. It was a hose (auxiliary air hose) running from the air-inlet manifold (in the very beginning of the aluminium-part of it...) to a little round thingy (auxiliary air valve) fixed to the engine block just left of where the inlet manifold meets the engine block. There's a new hose running from beneath this valve. The hose is about 1,5cm in diameter and maybe 40cm long. My hose leaked where it was connected to the valve, and I could hear the engine rpm differing while touching it. The hose was not expensive, and I temporarily sealed the leak with a rubber band... :-) My engine has run 338.026km, so there should be a lot of miles left in your engine too!
