I bought a 900S 1998 auto 3 months ago. It's my first Saab. A co-worker introduce me to Saab cars because his father drove Saab for many years and had many models. My first choice was saab and my second a Jetta. I am not disapointed in spite of some A/C problems. The engine is 2.3 non-turbo and perform very well. I just wish I had a turbo and manual transmission to take advantage of the full potential of the engine. I drove a 9-3 (auto) for a few minutes and it was really really nice to drive and more powerfull than my 900.
The Saturn dealership is good to excellent. The labor rate is the same for a Saturn, Isuzu (my last vehicule) and the Saab. The parts seems to be a bit more expensive than average (waterpump $250) but I don't know for the rest. My friend told me that the parts are lasting longer.
Buying a used saab is really a good deal. You have a good looking luxury car for a very good price. If possible buy your car in a small city (avoid large cities), the market is not really good for Saab there and you can save easily $1500 to $2000.
As for the new 9-3, well... I like very much the hatchback concept that was scrap with the new car. I like the opportunity of carrying what I want in my trunk not on the roof. My only solution is the family 9-5 car that is way too much expensive for me.
Also in the new 9-3, the engine(GM) is all aluminium and they have removed some parts so the car will be lighter but the engine is less powerfull than the old (Saab) one. Why change something that is very good or excellent? If you have noticed, cars are getting more powerfull than ever (Passat, Jetta, Nissan, jaguar (400hp!), Chrysler, etc, are going 200 and more hp.
The Saab is fun to drive, economical on gas (730km Highway at 130kmh, 500 km in city) and the most important unique. Count in a full day the number of BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Jetta, Passat and others that you see and the number of Saab. Park your car in a shopping center parking lot (well in view) and watch the people stare and examining you car. It is rewarding.
My next car will be a 9-3 SE(2002) 25th anniversary (manual). More powerfull than the base 9-3 but less than the viggen (I don't need all this power!)
My foot size is 10 and I am ok.
