How strong is your relationship with this dealer? If you have a long and positive history with them, by all means, let them make it up to you.
Otherwise, run - and tell everyone you know to avoid them. Speaking as a woman, I have had too many experiences with mechanics who think that they can tell me anything and I will believe it. (All the auto mechanic mojo must be stored in the penis.) If they have so little faith in you that they would lie to you about something so simple to check, what else will they lie to you about?
First of all, they didn't respect or value your insight about the car - you told them it had to be driven for at least 20 minutes for the brakes to fail - they didn't listen. Then, they so grossly underestimated your ability to read a little dial with numbers . . . you get the point. What about next time when you need a true diagnosis? They can tell you to replace the whole transmission instead of the little washer, trust is everything with mechanics. And, what if they didn't actually fix the brakes? That's your life at stake - not to be taken lightly.
Don't reward them for their unacceptable behavior. Ask them to pay for a competing dealer/service shop to verify that the problem has been fixed.
