Most I've done is drop in an Ethernet card w/o difficulty. For months have new harddrive, controller, and RW-ROM sitting on desk waiting for me to get some guts. Directions surprisingly clear.
1. re: harddrive (Maxtor 30GB), the directions refer to both 'system disk' and 'operating system disk' in different steps - are these the same? Fuzzy to me since the only disk I have is the Gateway disk (OS Win'98) I used to reinstall the sys after re-formatting last spring (easy).
2. re: controller install (Maxtor 133), do I fish out and remove the old one (ATA33) and replace, or do I 'add' this one next to the old one? I vote option 'a', but the directions don't make any mention of it. No experience, sorry!
3. Assuming the above goes fine, how 'bout slaving my old slow harddrive to the new master (have the directions) Never used a sys like that, but it 'sounds' convenient for storing pics/music/clutter temporarily before burning it, and keeping that 'garbage' off the master.
Thanks for any advice - little nervous but eager. Price to install hardware seems insane, but realize the techs earn their money when things get sticky.
