I've put in a couple Maxtor drives... the install diskette (or CD) that comes with the new drive has a relatively foolproof self-contained procedure for installing, partitioning, & formatting the new drive. Then it will copy your OS from the old disk to the new one (if you select that option). It does pretty much the same thing as fdisk, format, etc... but its all in 1 package so that makes it a bit easier. Just follow the on-screen directions; at least it worked when I did it.
