Hi,
This was another set-up episode, and the large plot element looming on
the horizon is war with New York family.
However, set-up for the war was a small part of THIS episode.
This episode dealt with problems and in particular how no one in the
Family wants to deal with problems. What the one-legged Russian lady
said about Americans and our problems is telling but misguided. It is
true that in the third world people seem to need less psychological help,
but that's simply because they do not have the LUXURY of TIME which would
ALLOW them to think. If Russians suddenly found themselves to be
affluent and find themselves with as much leisure time as Americans, they
would suddenly discover that they have psychological issues which they
need to work out as well.
Human minds were not designed for reflection and noble thoughts. The
human mind was designed for survival first and propagation of species
second. Higher thought and nobility are mere unintended consequences.
That is partly why we have SO much trouble dealing with our feelings
and conflicting emotions. None of our genetic programming helps us with
emotional and pschological issues. Also, much of the time, we have to
unlearn what we have been taught by our parents or environment to even
begin to unravel the Gordian knot of tortuous tangle that is our psyche.
So, the peg-leg is wrong. It is not that Americans in PARTICULAR have
issues with psychological problems. Americans come from the rest of the
world. In that respect, we are immune from uniformity. Whatever problems
we possess, the world possesses. The rest of the world is just lying to
themselves that they do not have problems.
Just HOW does the Russian lady NOT know what Tony is talking about when
he makes the statement "You of all people should be hitting the bottle."?
She is lying to herself, and everyone in this show lies to themselves
that they do not have problems. An easy way to spot people who lie to
themselves is to look for them to turn animalistic. For instance, Tony
could have thought about and easily refuted what the Russian lady said
about Americans and our problems, but Tony tries very hard not to EVER
think about his problems. Do you remember Dr. Melfi telling Tony that he
craves ceaseless action to prevent himself from thinking about the
horrible $hit he does? Well, he does crave ceaseless action. He eats a
lot. He makes love to any pretty thing with two legs or one good leg and
one peg leg.
So, let's get back to the scene where the Russian lady is talking with
Tony on the couch. Tony COULD have started thinking, but true to form
he turns animalistic. Well, you know what he did.
Then, there is the worst intervention ever for Christopher. When
Christopher was confronted about his drug addiction, he became very
belligerent. This is called fight or flight instinct, and Christopher
usually chooses to fight. When Christopher became belligerent and
started mouthing off to Silvio, Paulie and Tony, Silvio and Paulie became
violent (i.e. animalistic). Again, this was a chance for Silvio and
Paulie to think about immorality of how they lead their lives.
So, people falling back on their animalistic instincts is the one TRUE
and unfailing sign of not wanting to deal with their problems, and
EVERYONE in this show suffers from the tendency to lie to themselves and
avoiding at all cost having to think about their psychological issues
and starting to fix them.
Getting back to the original topic, I am 99% sure that there will be
a war with New York. Tony will pin Ralphie's disappearance on New York.
