Hi,

Yes, a lot of people in the third world or people in this country who
are just scraping by are just too busy surviving to worry about their
inner child :-)

Americans have a lot of time, and the vast majority of us who do have
free time try to prevent thought by drinking (to slow down thought
process), with sex, with mindless television (other than the
Sopranos of course :-) or even with substance abuse.

So, pleasure and pain most often fill the time which would otherwise
be occupied with thought. Pleasure is usually voluntary. Pain is
USUALLY involuntary. Both sensations have one thing in common. They're
also felt by animals.

So, human beings most often avoid THOUGHT which is uniquely human by
resorting to sensations which are NOT uniquely human.

I stand by my assertion that higher thought is purely accidental from
the point of view of genetics. However, that is a GOOD thing. That
allows individuals to claim their lives for themselves. If we rise
above our genetics AND our environment, we can safely say that WE did
it inspite of our genes! To forestall dangerous hubris, it is beneficial
to acknowledge the good grace of a higher power however. But, there is
nothing wrong with saying that with the grace of God we mended our lives
INSPITE of our genes and our environment, and to rise above our animal
genes and our humble environment, we need to start to THINK.
