and now I'm in graduate school.
If you buy a computer today you can expect it to be useful to you (ie "fast") for the next 4 years at the absolute most. A Laptop will be less useful in the long temr than a PC - they're not upgradeable (aside from RAM) and they tend to break with higher frequency as they're moved around a lot.
I got a BS in physics. I used my computer for word processing, spreadsheets, symbolic math programming (Mathematica and Matlab), and scientific coding (Fortran and C). A mac does all of these things more beautifully, and now with the advent of X, more stably than a PC. If you want a beautiful, fin, stable computer that's also a toy (I love iTunes!) buy one of the Mac laptops.
If you just want a cheap computer to do all of the above things then buy the parts off the web and build it yourself and run linux. If you don't do this off the bat its very likely that you'll try by the middle of your Sophmore year in college.
In retrospect though you might want to buy something simple that works when you start - there's no reason to spend more than $800 on a new PC though whatever you buy will be out of date in a few months and really there's no discernible difference between a 1GHz P3 and a 2GHz P4. As a freshman in college you should be spending your time studying rather than dicking around with Linux.
Warranties are a waste of money on a desktop. They would probably be worth it on a PC laptop.
