ok, no wars over this, this is a technical question.
Lets say you have a 10W30 oil. Lets assume its full synthetic, a good one. As I understand it, the purpose for multi-viscosity oil is to basically act like a 10 wt oil when the oil and engine are cold, then act like a more viscous 30 wt oil when things warm up. How do it know? No, sorry, thats not my question..but sort of. Does the 10W30 oil change from 10W directly to 30W, or is it a gradual process (ie 10W, then 20W, then 30W)? If its gradual, how much time are we talking about here?(assume ambient temp of 20C or something like that). Seconds? Half-seconds? Or, you could use 0W40 or 5W30 or whatever weight you want, or whatever weight oil you are passionate about :-D Thanks.
