Hi All,
This is actually about our Volvo 850, not the Saab, but you all are so helpfull...
Some may recall an earlier post - I warned/suggested that when buying tire and wheel packages from the tire rack, have one of their recommended installers put them on in case of a defect. Tire rack does not accept returned tires/wheels that have been driven on.
Anyway, after I noticed _severe_ vibrations coming from the rear when I put my new snows on (Mich. Arctic Alpin 185/65/15 on steel rims), I returned to the tire shop. The two rear wheels were out of round - slightly egged shaped. You could see it when you spin the wheel. Tires were fine they said. We called tire rack. They shipped me two new steel wheels, and will reimburse me for mounting and balancing. Shop put the new ones on, and checked to see if the wheels were round before mounting the tires. Its a reputable shop in Ithaca, NY. I don't know how sophisticated of a test they did. Well, I just drove about 250 miles on smooth highways at 70-75 mph. The car still vibrates. Not nearly as bad as it did, but it is quite noticeable, and you can hear some rattles/vibrations. This car, like my Saab, is silky smooth at speeds well above legal limits with the summer tires on (y'all know what I'm talking about). In fact, the Saab with snows is still smooth and rock solid at 80. NOw, I know we sacrifice some performance with snows, but this is rediculous. I think these wheels are still defective. Maybe they had a bad production run of wheels or something.
There is also some vibration in the steering wheel. not too bad though.
The other problem is, I'm a grad student (yeah, tough life driving my Volvo...I know), and We're in NJ for the holidays now, and 225 miles away from the shop that did the re-install. What to do? WIll they wear to round (will the high spots come down after a while)? Should I live with this? I don't think we should have to live with this. This was about a $500 purchase. We don't drive these fine Swedish autos becuase we want a rattle trap.
Help!
Thanks
Brian
