Here's how I see it:
The only thing that will kill the SUV craze is $3+/gallon gasoline. While this isn't impossible with Bush's "sabre rattling" over Iraq (C'mon all you right-wingers, flame away!!!!), it would be political suicide and I think he would do everything in his power to prevent it.
Both the XC70 and XC90 are extremely profitable for Volvo. Give them credit for getting into the market as soon as they did with nothing more then a beefed-up, AWD station wagon. Saab missed the boat on that one. They need an AWD 9-5 wagon with a couple extra inches of ground clearance, a beefier suspension, and some "macho" styling cues ASAP.
Audi has had great success with their Quattro versions of the A4 and A6. This caught everyone by surprise, including BMW. BMW and Volvo now have AWD sport sedans; Saab is again behind the times on this front. They must get high performance, 9-3 and 9-5 AWD sedans on the market real soon.
There are so many SUV options out there, Saab is going to have to give people a reason to choose their product. A "me-too" product isn't going to cut it. The good news, IMHO, is they already have the answer in house -- the 9-3x. I hope they have the stones to bring it to market more or less as is, and again, ASAP.
