Oh contrare, SAAB bretheren! Have you ever disassembled a turbo that has used standard "Texas Tee" all its life? Looks like the inside of a cancerous lung. The lubrication properties of conventional oils are probably fine for moderate to average use (I lived in Germany for ten years and drove Autobahn every day to work - most Americans drive their cars with kid gloves by comparison), and wil suffice for a normally-aspirated engine. Any component which spins in excess of 200K rpm, and regularly reaches temperatures in excess of 1000 degrees F is not a candidate for such oil. Synthetics coke at a much higher (by hundreds of degrees F) temperature; and are the only reasonable choice when you run a turbocharger. Why does Porsche recommend Mobil 1 as its standard lubricant?
