Jae, who are you considering? It seems I've head good & bad about both Oil Analyzers & Blackstone Labs, but that's like anything else, right? There's also Dyson's Analysis & H.O.Penn Machinery's "S.O.S.". (H.O.Penn's currently offering discounts to Saab owners, & giving free virgin oil analysis for a baseline comparison to your used oil.) I think the biggest point is to use the same lab each time, as I've heard variances between labs is greater than variances within a lab.

As for the way the rest of this thread's going, I think Lawrence has a good point, & I'd like to see pictures of the inside of Ed's disassembled turbo after 150k miles on dino oil. Granted, oil's not the only thing which affects engine life, & Ed may be a kinder, gentler owner. And as API specs force the improvement of conventional oil, & refiners are forced to use Group II & Group III base stocks to meet the specs, it will hold up better than it used to. So If you're one of those folks still stuck on 2k-3k mile change intervals, don't mind creating lots of unnecessary waste or spending lots of extra time & money doing all those additional oil & filter changes, then I think the new SL oils will do quite adequately. Obviously, we know where my preferences lie.

The other non-"normal circumstances" point to be made is for longer drain intervals. Even though only one of my car's a turbo, I still run all my oil to 10k miles. Based on all the studies/articles/analysies I've read, any Group IV full syn will still provide more protection after 10k miles than the matching dino (Group I or Group II) will after 1k-3k miles. That alone is enough to make me use it. The rest of the benefits just make it that much sweeter. Oh, & not having to change the oil gives me more time to spend here.

Aren't you glad?
