I researched this 4 years ago and got an MTD 8hp, 26" unit. Was then the top pick by Condemner Reports. I think it's a Tecumseh Snow King engine rather than a Briggs & Stratton. Anyway...
It's been very reliable. Has an electric start, but I find it almost always starts on the 2nd or 3rd pull. I change the oil, but it has the original spark plug.
I have a 135' driveway and clear it in 5 passes in about 20 to 30 mins. HOWEVER, if you are getting a lot of snow or if the snow is heavy, it works better (and is easier on the machine) if you go out a couple of times.
Still, Sunday Morning I cleared 12-14" with no trouble. Mine has 6 fwd speeds and 1st or 2nd are best for most uses for the weight of snow we get here.
If you will have to go up more than a moderate slope, get chains.
They are great tools/toys. Have fun!
