Glad you see it that way, Jim. If you read my earlier post, you'll see where I'm coming from on transportation. My point is simply that Oregonians complain bitterly about the crumbling condition of the roads here, yet have repeatedly defeated gas tax increases. Usually, the anti-tax activists make claims that ODOT/govt. is wasteful, etc. But, these claims are always unsubstantiated, or point to one example and use it as an indictment on government as a whole. Tax opponents have to make their message clear and simple because few people take the time to actually research the facts. So, "the government is screwing the voters" seems to be the most effective message.
Frankly, I don't mind rough roads really. But there are hundreds of bridges in the state that are reaching the end of their useful lifespan and are cracking. Once a bridge goes, the whole road is useless. It will be interesting to see how people respond to further deterioration of the road system. What do people really want???
