I'm not saying AWD doesn't work longitudinally, just that the engineering to do so is subtantially different that the engineering for a transverse setup. Again, look at the difference between an Audi A6q and an Audi TTq. *Substantially* different technologies both labelled "quattro" and developed separately due to the different needs of transverse vs. longitudinal AWD. For a more relevant comparison, take a look at a WRX vs. a Lancer Evolution.
As for the Pike's Peak Viggen, it used an X-Trac transmission which intruded quite heftily into the cabin. Not a problem on a race car, but probably not something the average car buyer would accept. The S2000 is most certainly RWD, and I'm not aware of any AWD version of it. The only other current FWD longitudinal engine I'm aware (besides the aforementioned Audis) would be the Dodge Intrepid and its ilk - Concordes and 300Ms etc. It has a setup similar to an Audi's - engine very much in front of the tranny.
I suspect Saab might be able to stick the V6 in there and not have some serious front-heaviness, but the four would simply put too much weight ahead of the front axle to be any fun... It would be like a Sonett, but worse!
