I just got a PC for home use. After years of procrastinating, We've finally entered the nineties and got ourselves a computer for use at home. I held out for so long because I figured I spend enough time on a computer at work and I didn't need to come home and spend any more time.

These days, it seems a computer is becoming more and more of a necessity than a luxury, and prices are falling as fast as the computers are getting better!

That said, here's what I got:

Dell Dimension 4550 P4 2.4Ghz w 533MHz bus speed
512 Mb 333MHz DDR SD RAM
60 Gb hard drive
CD rw/DVD rom combo drive

I'm using the monitor I have from my Unix workstation- an HP 21" CRT

I plan to use this for all the stuff you mentioned- email, web, office applications, and home budgeting. I also intend to use it for some CAD work- hence the upgraded RAM (it can be upgraded to 1Gb when it gets too slow) 60Gb isn't a huge drive, but its a good start IMO, and with the combo drive for CD/DVD I free up a space for an additional HD when I need it.

HP's are good- Personally I'm more comfortable with a P4 processor rather than a Celeron or AMD chip. If your not in a hurry, or if you don't intend to do anything too memory intensive then you could probably get by with less RAM

I'd look for something with a network card- and if it has an integrated graphics card make sure it has an AGP slot at least so you can upgrade your graphics later if you need to. Lots of USB slots are a good thing too- I have 5 I think, I'd make sure there's at least 4.

Check out the Dell's too- I was set to buy an HP, but Dell had the best deal.

Good luck!

Brad
