but I say buy a Mac.
In 12 years and 6 Macs I have found them to be incredibly reliable and issues of compatibility are really non-issues. All but one of my clients are PC-based (all big corporations) and using Office I never have a file transfer problem. The most I ever have to do is add .xxx extension so some versions of Windoze can read the file.

There *is* less Mac software out there, but most likely there is everything you need--you just have fewer options.

They network in about 5 minutes (I have 3 set up in my home office) Plus, they are all but immune to viruses, since nearly all those are written for Wintel machines.

One thing: whatever you get, consider a laptop in lieu of a desktop. I have been using a PowerBook as my main computer for 10 to 12 hours a day for 4 years and it can do all I ever need. And I find that most of my corporate clients have their employees on laptops so they can be fully functional wherever they travel. Some plug into a large monitor in their office. My screen is 14" diagonal and is fine, even for graphic design work.
