I think the big difference here is that x40 cars look like Volvos. They don't share any sheetmetal with the Carisma they're based on. Take a look at the link below. It's in Russian, but you can see the differences. They are powered by a 2.0l (ok, originally 1.9l) turbo inline four and feature Volvo-like interiors. Most people don't know they aren't Volvos - even owners. I told a guy I know who works for a fargin' Volvo dismantler his S40 was a Mitsubishi and he told me I was wrong. That's how good a job Volvo did disguising them.
The Saabaru, OTOH, they say will include most of the existing Impreza's sheetmetal, interior, transmission, and engine. I seriously think you'll have a hard time convincing any buyer it's really a Saab under there. *Really* hard.
There is a difference between platform sharing and badge engineering. The former is generally acceptable a good cost saving method. The latter is the answer to a question nobody asked - "What does Car A look like when you put Car B's emblem on it?"
