Look, I love Saabs and (unless GM goes into shameful badge engineering mode -- Saab TrailBlazer, anyone?) always will. But Saab needs to address this challenge from its domestic rivals.
I've heard of quality problems with the S60/V70/S80, but then again I've heard and experienced quality problems in the 9-3 (old and new). My Viggen's interior is a mix of the sublime (leather, the seats) with the cheesy (plasticky door handles, e-brake, center console, door trim, unseemly rattles).
Saab is letting Volvo steal the performance game. While I know Saab is in a deeper hole than Volvo and doesn't have the full resources (or profits) at its disposal that Volvo does, it seems to me that they need to address power concerns, or else the "value for money" proposition that Saab has been latching onto isn't going to help much. A $34K Vector looks interesting, but less so with a 32K G35 (260hp) or a 37K S60R (which has AWD and 300hp and masses of torque).
300hp is but a chip tweak away for the 9-3 and 9-5. Saab needs to do it.
