I've used Yakimas for years and carried some hefty loads on a Scirocco, a GTI and a C900. The bare bars have a wind howl but it's not too bad unless the roof is open. I leave them on most of the time, but if I don't need 'em on a trip I pull 'em off to cut the noise.

I like that the Yakimas are wider than the Saab racks because it gives you more options--like carrying two kayaks or sailboards side by side.Carrying boats (which are kinda aerodynamic) I don't lose a lot in mileage- maybe 3 mpg.

Biggest load: a Laser class sailboat with mast and boom, two sailboards with masts, booms and sail bags. About 235 pounds.
