It was a single tail, with low-mounted horizontal stabilizers.
But on the physics, LesH is right, gravity doesn't have much to do with forward speed, but since there *is* air resistance, you still lose forward speed since there is nothing more to propel you forward. If you go into a "boxman" position to stabilize your bod as it falls you'll hit between 110 and 125 mph vertically, and gradually bleed off your forward speed. When you pop the chute you lose just about all your forward speed and most of your vertical. Of course with a steerable canopy you can actually fly your chute.
