Some of the best things in life are free. I stumbled into a U2 concert at SUNY Albany when I was an 8th grader riding my bike around the college campus (this was in 1983- their "war" tour). They were headlining the "mayfest" year-end party, and just about to hit it big. I only caught the end of the show, but *WOW*
Other free shows include Dizzy Gillespie, Dread Zeppelin (don't laugh- they rocked hard) and Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.
Small rooms are great, too. I've seen the Charlie Hunter Quartet, Warren Zevon, Camper Van Beethoven, Andy Summers, Phish, Yellowman, Negativland, Les Claypool, Spearhead, Natalie Merchant, Smashing Pumpkins and Fishbone in crowds of less than 300 people.
Favorite large shows?
Triple-bill of Pearl Jam, Smashing Pumpkins, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the RPI field house in '91.
Grateful Dead 4th of July 1988, Rich Stadium, Buffalo. I think I caught every show but one in Albany in '90, '91, '92, and '93.
Fishbone at the Chance in Poughkeepsie (twice).
Oysterhead in Utica.
B.B. King at Stratton Mtn, Vt.
Roger Daltrey at the Palace Theatre, Albany- John Entwistle joined in at the end.
Phish- I'll have to narrow it down to 4 shows (a total of 17 SETS of music)-
12/17/95- Lake Placid, NY
The Clifford Ball- Plattsburgh AFB (NY), 1995
The Great Went- Loring AFB (Limestone, ME), 1996
Halloween '94, Glens Falls NY
Somehow the ones that got away stand out the most. I had a chance to see Frank Zappa, but obeyed my conscience and studyied for an exam instead. I had no idea that my last chance had slipped by... Same for Stevie Ray Vaughn. Boy do I regret missing them.
