I used to really like Dells. I still buy a lot of them because that's just easier at work. However, their PCs are not as nice as they used to be. Lots of really, really cheap components inside, lots of integration, with most things built into the motherboard. Recently I purchased two really cheap $300 PCs for software testing and shortly after that two Dell workstations. The generic PCs turned out to be exactly the same inside as Dells, save for a few cosmetic differences. The Dells were around $1000, or three time more than generics.
I general, I prefer generic PCs made out of generic components. That makes it a lot easier to upgrade in the future. Generic parts plug into one another a lot better. I would recommend that you buy a solid generic system, preferably AMD-based. Go with a vendor that has good reputation (check resellerratings.com) and allows for good customization. Choose components wisely and you wont have to throw away parts when time comes to upgrade.
