Trevor, I am not an engineer, but am a bit of an audiophile. My evidence on capacitors is just based on experience. I have added capacitors to system that are running high power (say 600 watts rms +). The car owner was usually experiencing things like dimming head lights and battery trouble, along with inconsistant volume levels. Adding a cap (1 farad for up to 1000 watts) has stopped the dimming and stablized the voltage, allowing these systems to play louder or more consistantly. I also believe that adding a cap will help prolong battery life. I a few situations I have seen quick battery deaths caused by unnatural power demands, replacng the battery and adding a cap have allowed to new battery to last much longer. Also yes I agree, the cap should be placed as close to amp as possible.
