I did it. My Opinion... Posted by MisplacedYankee [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: OT: Anybody w/ LASIK expereince - good or bad?, SS, Mon, 31 Mar 2003 08:55:11 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I did it and have no regrets. What I tell everyone is go to a real doctor and have it done, don't stop by the mall and go for the cheap deals. This is your eyes you are talking about after all....
My health plan at work covered the lasik and my cost was 10%. I went to a doctor that had been doing laser surgery since 1975 and was an eye doctor I had been going to for a few years. He only did his work at the finest facility in the area with the latest equipment. A good doctor will also make sure lasik is right for you -- I never trust those guys in the mall -- they are selling a commodity. Total cost (in 1999) was $4k for both eyes with full follow-up treatment and exams.
The whole experience is odd. Its like going to the dentist - I think it is human nature to not enjoy someone messing with your mouth or your eyes. The procedure is painless with the exception of some pressure (left eye will feel more pressure) and the uncomfortable feeling of making sure you don't move. After the procedure the first 12 to 24 hours can drive you a little nuts with the itchy eyes you can't itch or see out of. Once that's over you are thrilled because you can see 100% clear without any aid. I just remember waking up and being able to read the clock for the first time in the middle of the night.
4 years later and my eyes are great. I love not wearing contacts or glasses. I had trouble at night for about 6 months where I would see the aura around lights - headlights were extremely annoying, but over time this went away as they tell you it will.
I have many friends that are Pilots and they have all had it done with no problems. I truly believe your experience will be based on the doctor when the treatment is done.
I have no hesitation recommending lasik. Good luck. Feel free to email if you have more Qs.
