Here's my impression of the GM lineup (trucks excluded)
Buick: Big and comfy, with sporting intentions. I think Buick is going for civilized, yet sporty and that would seem to fit with Lexus.
Chevy: Cheap and sporty. Even the Corvette is cheap if you compare it with the competition.
Oldsmobile: Buick with extra chrome
Pontiac: Somewhere between Chevy and Buick. Basically a chevy with more bulges, and foglights too.
Saturn: cheap and reliable, but not too inspiring. A good match for the A to B crowd.
Cadillac: Big and comfy. Bigger and comfier (is that a word?) than Buick. CTS is a new direction, probably cutting into Pontiac Grand Prix sales. Could compete with MB or BMW depending which you choose. They've got a ways to go yet.
Saab: Doesn't really fit into the GM lineup IMO. Its faster than most of GM's lineup, but not in a pushrod V8 way. Its very comfortable, but it doesn't float along the road like a Buick. Saab is what you buy when everything else seems boring- and it does after you see the Saabs.
GM doesn't know what to do with Saab, for some reason they can't see its virtues. I think Chrysler could have done a much better job marketing and developing Saab if I had to choose between the "Big 3"
