Actually IIRC (I'll have to dig it up again) the original window sticker from my '97 Aero says the same thing: "Engine - Germany".
I beleive that before Saab and Scania split, it was actually Scania that manufactured the engines. Presumably after the two companies parted company, Saab had to find someone else to do the manufacturing. The question is, who? Wish I knew!
