What type of array did you have. Mirror, stripe with parity. How many drives? I just had a drive go bad on an old file server last weekend. The knuckle heads before stored info. on a set of five spanned drives-DUH! The last drive failed two days before the new dell 2.4 dual processor showed up-200 gigs, 2 gigs of ram. We tried everything to get the info off before we went to backups. Here's a little known trick that sometimes works-worked for us and others. Take drives and freeze them for 3-4 hours. The platters will shrink and will sometimes start to spin again. We were able to get info that was not on tape backup on fri. This will last for 45 min-1.5 hours at a time. Sounds weird right? Well this saved my Butt. Nothing was getting these drives to come back online. Dell said give up! Thank god for Google. Also, open drives, when drives are cold, fire machine up and see if platter(s) spin. No joke, but you can sometimes give them a little nudge with you finger and away they go.
Thanks for the site, I'm on it all the time since I have about 15 computers on at all times-four at my desk.
