Murphy's Law Applies... and sleeping Posted by Scott Paterson [Email] (#13) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Scott Paterson) on Sat, 19 Apr 2003 13:39:39 In Reply to: old drives, jp, Sat, 19 Apr 2003 04:53:10 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
TSN's disk failures were unbelievalbe. Part of the reason the restore went along pretty well (besides the fact that Jason set up a temporary server, got the restore going, and changed DNS settings all after hours) was the fact that I had already been working on a server move and the previous Friday had alerted Jason that I was within ten days of the final move. On Wednesday I alerted Jason that I was doing a test move of one of the smaller domains on the site to the new server. The very next day and within just a few days of leaving that server altogether, both hard drives failed. I made a command decision early on in the process to focus all restore efforts on the new server and Jason made the DNS changes even before the backup was 10% restored (restoring 5GB of incremental backup files over a T1 takes a lot longer than you would initially think unless you do the math). I had the new server already online with an April 2nd copy of the website I had been using for testing purposes. After he made the DNS change, it was literally seconds before the first people had the new DNS info and we're seeing the new server. So, the TSN server, after living in my home in California in 1995 and 1996, then in Maine from 1997-2003 (thanks to Midcoast!), is now back in my home on a dedicated T1 in California. I have many areas on the site that still need minor fixes and updates, but I think everything will be back to normal during the upcoming week.
The other Muprhy's Law part of this is that my mom arrived for a visit on Thursday night - this being only the second time she's made it out to California since I moved here in 1990. I have three siblings (a brother and two sisters) who live in San Francisco so she's been spending time with them during my mini-crisis.
Sleep Factor: Get up 8am Thur- Server dies 1pm Thu - 8:30AM Fri sleep for two hours - 1pm Fri sleep for two hours - 4AM Sat finally can't focus my eyes on the computer screen any longer and go to bed for 8 hours. I feel like I have a hangover.
